Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death, with national survival rates averaging just 10%. In areas of San Diego, where over 2,600 AEDs are mapped, survival rates are between 50 – 70%. Some parts of eastern MA are as low as 3%.
Boston Shock Squad is working to change that with a goal of mapping 1500 AEDs across the city and state. These locations will be accessible to 911 systems today, and soon on smartphones.

Cardiac Crusade Story
Julie Coon survived a sudden cardiac arrest because bystanders knew CPR and how to locate and use an AED to save her life. Her husband, Greg, quickly realized how critical it is to find the nearest AED in an emergency. Together, they founded Cardiac Crusade, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to make AED locations instantly searchable by both emergency dispatchers and smartphones.
Phase 1 of their mission is building a national volunteer network to map AEDs so 911 systems can instantly direct first responders to those locations. Phase 2 goal is to get those AED locations on smartphones via Google and Apple Maps.
